Eden Burning At Greenbelt?
March 29th 2003, 6:52am
I just noticed that in this year's music lineup for the greenbelt festival, Eden Burning are listed. I went to their farewell gig at Greenbelt '96. Does this mean they are reforming, or is it just a one off? If they're really playing, I'm going!

Gangs Of New York
March 29th 2003, 6:18am
Yesterday evening some friends and I went into town to watch the film Gangs of New York. I didn't have much of an idea what it was about beforehand, but being a Martin Scorsese film I assumed it would be good, and I was right. Although it was perhaps a bit too violent for my liking. In the UK it's an 18, but they don't seem to rate films in Kenya. Or if they do, they hide the rating very well.
The movie was very well made, and it's the first time I've seen Leonardo Di Caprio in a film since The Beach and Titanic, and he's not too bad an actor now. Apparently Catch Me If You Can isn't bad either.
After we'd seen the film we had just enough time to go to Debonairs Pizza and get a bit of fast food. I took the opportunity to get some more dodgy digital photos, which you can see here, you lucky people.

Digital Camera Arrives
March 27th 2003, 7:39am
Hooray! I now have my digital camera. And in celebration, here are two random photos I took with it. One is the road round the corner from my house, and the other is a matatu in the rain this morning. Really interesting, I think you'll agree.
Now I won't have to wait for ages to get my photos developed before putting them on here. Of course, I'll still carry on using my proper camera because the digital one is rubbish quality. But it is quite convenient.

Naivasha III - The One Where Wendy Falls Into A Pit
March 24th 2003, 9:16am
I've just got back from the Youth Weekend Away in Naivasha. Once again we went to Fisherman's Camp, but this time we had a few more people on the camp.
We had an eventful start to the weekend, when Wendy (one of the youth leaders), managed to fall into a five metre deep hole in the middle of the camp site, which had been covered with branches. Thankfully she somehow managed to not break anything, although she did hurt her arm and got quite scratched by the thorns in the pit.
On Saturday morning we went down to the lake to do some wakeboarding. We also played football with the kids who were hanging around by the lake. The first ball got punctured on the thorn bushes, but Andrew arrived from Nairobi a few minutes later and had fortunately brought another football with him.
He had also brought a huge box of fireworks and on Saturday night we gave them to the youth and left them to their own devices. This time we didn't buy so many firecrackers, but the lads still kept enough so they could wake the girls the next morning. Which was a good thing, because after watching DVDs until sunrise nothing else was going to wake them.
On Sunday we went down to the bottom camp and did some swimming and played some basketball. I was really pleased with myself because I got two baskets, which is the best I've done since I was at school.

Dogs and Frogs
March 18th 2003, 5:44am
The dogs and frogs did their best to keep me awake last night. The dogs usually run around in the road down at the corner and try to get run over in the dark. (Andrew likes to stop and growl at them. No, he's not a dog - he's a friend from church). Last night the dogs decided to have a shouting match, and the rest of Nairobi's canine population joined in.
Not wanting to be left out, the frogs in the compound over the road added to the noise by doing their impressions of pneumatic drills and football rattles.

Sing, Sing, Sing
March 17th 2003, 6:17am
On Saturday night a group of us went out to celebrate Andrew's birthday. First we went to Andrew and David's place on Ngong Road for a few drinks before we went to a restaurant/club just up the road, where I had the worst food since I've been in Kenya - a very greasy burrito which made me feel a bit ill.
They had karioke there, which was interesting because it's the first time I've heard someone do karioke who could actually sing. But after a few songs the power went out, so it had to all stop. I was a bit surprised that a place like that didn't have their own generator, but they were sort of prepared - within seconds of the power going out they were already lighting candles and distributing them round the place.
Our table weren't put off by the lack of power though, and carried on singing regardless, doing some interesting acappella arrangements of classic karioke songs!
After a while we got bored of that and went off (in a Landrover with three people on the roof) to a bar where there was a live band playing Congolese music. They weren't brilliant though, so we moved on to a club up Langata Road where there was a much better band playing. They had a very good drummer, but it's not really my kind of music. It's far too repetetive.
I got back quite late and didn't sleep very well to start with because of that dodgy burrito, so ended up sleeping until ten to eleven on Sunday morning, and nearly missed the whole of church. I got there in time to help clear up the PA and then go out for lunch.
In the evening I went to youth group, where we were going to show a DVD. But just after we'd set up the laptop and projector, the power went off. So we couldn't do that. Hopefully the power'll stay on next week at the youth weekend away when we try to show DVDs.

Nothing Much
March 15th 2003, 8:39am
Hmm, I haven't put anything on here for a while, have I? I've been quite busy rewriting the code for this blog, and forgotten about adding content. And I've been waiting for my cheapo digital camera to arrive, because then I can put pictures on here all the time. And I won't be worried about getting it nicked, so I'll be able to take it on matatus and stuff like that.

Exploring
March 2nd 2003, 1:07pm
After church today I went for a random drive to take some photographs. I started off in Karen and then just kept going. After a while the tarmac ran out, but the road was still quite smooth for a bit. Then the road started to get bumpier. At one point the road was paved with large bricks and it was probably bumpier than when there was just dirt. I didn't know where I was going, but I could always see the Ngong Hills in front or to the left of me, so I was pretty sure I could get back to Nairobi sooner or later!
I only took about five photos in the end, but it was nice drive, and it's always interesting to see just how different everything is only a few kilometres outside Nairobi.

I forgot to mention the pothole I found on the road in one valley - it stretched over halfway across the road and was a metre or two deep. There was only just enough room to drive past it. Next time it rains the road will probably get to narrow to use.
