Snow

April 28th 2003, 2:30pm

Today it snowed. Okay, so it didn't snow in Nairobi, but it might have snowed in Kenya somewhere. I did see snow today. I had to look through binoculars to see it. It was on top of Mount Kenya.

But I bet not like the snow we had in Estonia a few weeks ago(50 centimeters at last in a night)

Road Trip

April 22nd 2003, 8:40am

Yesterday, after a long weekend of sitting behind my computer, I got bored and decided to go for a drive with my cameras. I started randonly driving along the main road out of town, and then kept going. Since my digital camera is so small I could just hold it on top of the steering wheel and snap away.

Eventually, after passing the escarpment and driving about eighty kilometres, I got bored and turned round and went home. And I could see the clouds were getting a bit dark and I knew I wouldn't be able to get very good pictures once it started raining.

It did start raining eventually though, and I had to slow down to about 40km/h because I could hardly see the road in front of me. Fortunately I'd already passed the escarpment by that point, as I wouldn't have enjoyed driving up there while not being able to see the side of the road.

It carried on raining through the night and this morning the whole of Upper Hill is without power. At least when it started raining last night I made sure I got my lantern fully charged so I'll have light this evening if they don't get it fixed before then.

It's ironic that in a country where nearly all the electricity is produced at hydroelectric power plants, when it rains the power goes out.

By the way, the top photo shows a donkey cart on the left, a couple of matatus in the middle, and an Eldoret Express bus on the right. You don't want to get in the way of the Eldoret Express - because of their big wheels they can just fly right over most potholes and they don't slow down for anything.

The second picture shows a lookout point by the rift valley. The hill slopes away steeply from the road, so the dukas are on a platform supported by wooden poles.

I Love Rain?

April 20th 2003, 2:02pm

Look - it rains in Africa! It's been raining for about an hour now. Although the Kenyans will be pleased it's raining, I still can't quite shake off my English predisposition to disliking rain.

New Roof

April 17th 2003, 1:02pm

It's been quite noisy here recently, as they've been putting a new roof on the office. It used to be a flat roof, but the rain keeps coming through (not that we've had much recently, even though we're supposed to be having the long rains now). Now we're getting a sloping roof. It's a good job I took the panorama from up there when I did. All the girders get in the way now.

More Digital Photo Fun

April 12th 2003, 12:01pm

I went to lunch at the Yaya Centre today. Paul drove, so I stuck my camera out the window and took photos all the way. Out of the 106 pictures I took, here are three of the most interesting ones. Some of the others were interesting too, but you can look at those when I get home.

The first two pictures were taken at the market near the hospital - the same place I took the picture of matatus the other day. I think it's called Kenyatta Market. Notice the ice cream seller, and all the people with umbrellas to shelter from the sun.

The third picture is some dukas at the end of my road, where you can buy fruit and vegetables and sodas.

If the dotted border is missing on the left, it's because your browser isn't very good. If the border isn't even dotted, you browser is rubbish. Try downloading one which works, like Mozilla 1.3 (http://www.mozilla.org)

I also just discovered that the comments things wasn't working for the last week or two, which might be why I've not had any comments for a while. It's fixed now though.

'Tis But A Scratch

April 8th 2003, 5:43am

Here's a bit of Monty Python. Or is it the news from Iraq? I'm not sure.

Arthur: Now stand aside worthy adversary.
Knight: 'Tis but a scratch.
Arthur: A SCRATCH? Your arm's off!
Knight: No it isn't.
Arthur: Well, what's that then?
Knight: I've had worse.
Arthur: You liar!
Knight: Come on you pansy!

Arthur: Look, you've got no arms left!
Knight: Yes I have!
Arthur: LOOK!!
Knight: Just a flesh wound.

Midget Jones's Diary

April 7th 2003, 5:17am

Cigarettes: 0
Blood: 0.001cc

Woke up this evening feeling a little groggy - haven't had a drink for two days now. Heard that James has run out of Doom, so popped round to his for a nightcap.

He was sitting in his living room reading a book, so I buzzed down to see if I could have a bite while he wasn't looking. Unfortunately he flinched when I landed on his arm and I flew off 'cos I though he was about to splat me. I didn't feel like being liberated just yet.

At least he wasn't wearing that Vile Repellant that some people wear - although it's not as bad as other mosquitoes say - you can usually find a spot near their ankles or neck that they missed.

I tried another tactic. I did several fly-pasts at full throttle right past his ears. He swiped at me but missed every time. I'm just too fast for him. Once he'd got bored of that I went down and had a quick sip from his knee before he noticed and tried to squash me. This time I was too slow and he got me.

(I know, it sounds unbelievable that a dead mosquito is writing this. But how much more believable would it be that a live mosquito was writing a blog entry?)

Matatus

April 5th 2003, 8:43am

Yesterday evening I walked to Andrew and David's house for a party, and took a load of photos on the way. These pictures were taken at the market on the corner of Mbagathi Way and Ngong Road, which is where a lot of matatus stop to pick up and set down passengers. It's usually complete chaos - the picture doesn't quite get that across. I think the only way to show the chaos would be a video. The picture on the right just shows a couple of overloaded matatus with people hanging out of the doors.

Voluntary Debt

April 2nd 2003, 9:59am

How I love being a volunteer. Spending all my hard earned cash to help with bible translation in Africa and then running up a load of debt because I don't have enough support coming from home. Perhaps I should quit while I'm behind and go back home now.

Catch Me If You Can

April 1st 2003, 5:43am

I said the other day that I'd heard the film Catch Me If You Can isn't bad. I've now seen it myself and I can definitely say it isn't bad. In fact, it's a really good film and I enjoyed it immensely.

Oh, and that picture has nothing to do with the film. It's a guy selling sodas at the side of the road. (Sodas is the American term they use for fizzy drinks here.)
