My blog - April 2005
Last Sunday
April 29th 2005, 5:06pm
Last Sunday was rather busy. I went to church in the morning, but had to leave before the end of the service because I needed to be at a restaurant in Leicestershire by half twelve for my brother's birthday meal with our family and his wife's family. And then after that my sister and I went off to the Walker's Stadium where we watched Leicester Tigers lose the Heineken Cup semi-final to Toulouse, but we didn't mind too much as we were expecting it, and the atmostphere in the Walkers Stadium was amazing, and it was worth going just to watch a rugby game in that Stadium instead of at Welford Road.
After that game I took my sister home and then had to rush back to Coventry so that I could talk to Nomi on Skype. And I managed to get back in time and I talked to her for the first time since she got her job on the cruise - nearly six weeks! It was wonderful to hear her voice again. 'Only' five months to go until I get to see her again!

Blindride
April 14th 2005, 12:26pm
Yesterday I went to Manchester to see a band called Blindride playing at the Night and Day Cafe. I had no plans to go until the afternoon, when my housemate John said he was going, so I went along too. Some people might say it's a bit excessive to go all the way to Manchester just to see a band, but it only took just over an hour and a half to drive there, so it's not really that far away.
The Night and Day Cafe was a good venue for a band, and Blindride were a good band for the venue. I think for the first time at a pub gig, I could actually hear the individual instruments playing, as they had the balance just right. And each song sounded different, they were really tight, and there was some great guitaring. I was impressed! And then I discovered that it was their first ever gig together, and I was even more impressed.

One Nation
April 7th 2005, 10:38pm

This evening I went to The Hope And Anchor to see One Nation playing. Shay, my housemate, is the percussionist (although that doesn't help in that picture where everyone is playing percussion!), but it's his last gig as he's leaving Coventry this weekend (and therefore isn't my housemate for much longer.) The gig was very good. You should check them out if you get the chance!

Derwent Reservior
April 2nd 2005, 6:44pm
Today I went to the Peak District to take photos. I left here at ten o'clock, called in at Go Outdoors to buy an OS map of the area, and got to Derwent Reservoir at twenty past twelve. I would have got there earlier but I got a bit lost driving around the country roads near the reservoir.
I didn't have any plans except to take some photos of the dam, but after parking up and taking some pictures I started walking along the path by the reservoir to see if I could get some more pictures. Then I came across a stream coming down off the hills, with a footpath, so I headed up the path to see where it went. And then I kept walking because it was quite nice up there. I check my map to make sure I'd be able to get back to the car reasonably quickly, and there was about a five mile loop I could do, so I carried on.
It took about two and a half hours altogether - I was walking quite fast on the level, but I was only wearning trainers rather than walking boots, and ended up getting a blister which slowed me down. And I kept stopping to take photos as well. When I feel like it (maybe tomorrow afternoon?) I'll put some of them on this website.
On the way home I was driving through Chesterfield and noticed that the church had a twisted, crooked spire. I think I've heard about it before, but I didn't know where it was until today. So I stopped and took a load of pictures of that as well.
And then I cam home. Via a petrol station, to get some petrol and some food, as I hadn't taken any with me. Thankfully I did remember to have breakfast before I went though, otherwise I would really have run out of energy.
It was really beautiful up there - I don't think the photographs really capture it very well. I'm going to have to go back another day, because there were other things I saw in the distance which I wanted to photograph, but they were too far away to walk to today.
