Car Fixing

August 28th 2006, 4:27am

Naomi and I spent the weekend fixing up our car. Yesterday we went to Pick'n'Pull, but didn't know where it was and ended up at Buck's Auto Parts instead, which was good because they had a Golf and a Jetta with nearly all the parts we needed, including new headlights and a whole stack of other parts, which came to only fifty dollars. And while we were there, another guy came along looking for Golf headlights. He'd already been to Pick'n'Pull and not found any, so we were glad we'd gone to Buck's instead.

Then we got home, and I closed the sunroof and the handle snapped off. So today we went back to Buck's where we got a few more bits, but no handle, and then we went to Pick'n'Pull and got a handle and a couple of rear speakers which fit our car. And then came home and fitted everything to the car. Here's a list of what we've done to it:

  • Changed both headlights (the old ones were cracked), which had a side effect...
  • ...the front grille now clips on properly
  • Fitted sunroof handle
  • Put in a new ashtray (the old one was the wrong colour)
  • Fitted a strut to hold the bonnet up (we didn't have one before)
  • Changed one set of taillights so they match now (we used to have one red indicator and one orange, now both are orange)
  • Fitted the radio aerial
  • Installed a rain tray (now we shouldn't get puddles in the car when it rains)
  • Installed rear speakers (which still need to be wired up)
  • Replaced the boot light switch
  • Replaced the windscreen wipers
  • Covered the holes in the doors where the wing mirror adjusters would have been

We still have a whole load of things to do before we sell the car, but it's starting to look a lot more saleable than it was.

Hi James,

Great looking blog site, I like the maps showing places you have visited, maybe you could include links to blogs you have written about them?

See you soon

Out with the old

August 24th 2006, 1:22am

After nearly four years I've decided it's time for a change. So I've redesigned my website. Here are a few of the highlights of the new site:

  • Removed some pages and simplified the menu. The old site had various pages I wasn't really using any more, so I didn't need all those menu items any more.
  • Improved the blog. Now if you click on the 'show comments' link the comments will appear immediately instead of having to load another page.
  • Another blog improvement. I've got rid of the unreadable blurry numbers and used a turing test instead to prove you're a human and not a spambot posting comments on my site.
  • New photo page. I'm now storing my photos on flickr, and displaying the photos and sets on this website by using their API.
  • Improved the html and css on the site.
  • Added links to other people's blogs on the front page.

There are still some improvements I want to make, but I'm pleased with it so far. Let me know if anything doesn't work for you though.

3D Rocks

August 16th 2006, 10:39pm

Here's a 3D picture of some rocks somewhere on Vancouver Island. I forget where exactly. You have to do that uncrossing your eyes thing to be able to see it in 3D.

Actually, these rock formations can be found at Berry Point, on Gabriola Island. The Malaspina Galleries were pretty cool, too!

The Promised Photos

August 11th 2006, 7:20pm

I've sorted through my photos a little now, so here are four I think are worth sharing.

This is the view out of our hotel bedroom window in Tofino. We could only afford to stay there for one night, but the view was awesome. Islands would appear our of and disappear into the fog so the view was never the same for very long.

Just down the road from the hotel was Long Beach, where there were a lot of surfers. But it was foggy there too, so it was pretty difficult to get any pictures of them. But I got this picture of four people on their way out to the surf.

When we stayed on Gabriola Island for three days, we discovered this beat up truck by the road. There was also a two foot high model frog about ten metres up in the tree behind it, but it didn't really improve the photo!

On the way home there was a forest fire across the valley from highway one. I didn't actually see any fire, but there was plenty of smoke, and two very busy helicopters taking water from the river in enormous buckets and dropping it on the trees.

Mr and Mrs Ots

August 10th 2006, 4:26am

This is just a quick update, because I don't have time to write about everything just now. On Saturday just over a week ago, Naomi and I got married, and during the last week we had our honeymoon over on Vancouver Island. We're now back in Calgary and have moved into the apartment which has been sublet to us. We had a hire car for the honeymoon, which was good because today the starter motor gave up on the Golf and I had to get a new one, which would have been a nuisance last week! The picture is us standing next to the biggest tree in Cathedral Grove. We have eight hundred and seven pictures to sort through before you get to see any more. And for actual wedding pictures you'll have to wait, because we don't have them yet either.
