American Football
May 28th 2007, 10:50pm
This afternoon I went to the Leicester Tigers ground to watch an American Football game between the Leicester Panthers and the Loughborough Aces. I haven't watched American Football live before - only on TV in the superbowl a few times. I have to say, when there aren't advert breaks every few seconds, it almost becomes watchable. Certainly on a par with a bad game of football - like the FA Cup Final between Manchester and Chelsea last week. Rugby Union and Ice Hockey have to be the best sports to watch though.
I took quite a few photos during the game, and couldn't decide which to put on my blog, so I chose three in the end, as you can see. In the third picture I thought the players looked like dufflepuds.
Unfortunately, Naomi had to work despite it being a bank holiday, which sucked, because it would have been much better if she'd been there with me. And if the weather hadn't been freezing cold and rainy!

Silly Cat

While we were at our friends' house for dinner yesterday, their cat went outside through the cat flap, and then seemed to forget how to get back in.

Much Beardage
May 26th 2007, 11:38pm
Today I went to a model railway exhibition with my brother. Because he had no-one else to take him, and I haven't seen much of him recently - not because I wanted to go to a model railway exhibition. I have to admit that I was quite impressed by the details of some of the models, and took some photographs to illustrate it. I also took some photos of the many old bearded men who were also there, but I decided I probably shouldn't shame them by publishing their pictures here. I reckon it was about 98% male, 75% old, 10% bearded, 10% extremely nerdy, 5% extremely normal, and other percents to fill in the gaps where necessary.
A few times I found it hard not laughing out loud at people. One of the model railways was about two metres long and was operated by two old bearded people, who looked like they were concentrating very hard, and instead of talking to each other, rang little bells. Apparently that's what the signalmen used to do, and they wanted to make it realistic. I just had difficulty not laughing at them. But overall it was an interesting day. I don't think I'll be making a model railway myself though.

Only just read this... 6 months after you posted it! I'd like to point out to any readers who don't know me that I'm not one of the beardy, old or extremely nerdy percentage (well, the last one is open to question I guess, depending on whether you think all people with an interest in model railways are extremely nerdy or not....!!)

Pickup
May 6th 2007, 8:53pm
This morning my homegroup and I went to the memorial park to give out free bottles of water, and discovered there was a Sikh festival going on, so it didn't take long to give out all the water. Then we went to Pizza Hut for lunch, and then I saw this cool VW pickup truck outside. Personally, I would have avoided the fake leopard skin dashboard, and I'm not sure if it's purposefully ratted, or if it's just dirty, but I liked it anyway.

Puffins
May 1st 2007, 12:06am
Naomi and I have just got back from our long weekend in Pembrokeshire. One of the main reasons we went there (rather than Cornwall, which was our other idea) was so that Naomi could see Puffins. Well, so that we could both see them, but Naomi had mentioned before that she wanted to see them. So we drove over to Wales on Saturday, found our B&B and then drove up to the northern part of the National Park and saw a seal near a lighthouse, and looked for whales but didn't see any.
On Sunday we took a boat over to Skomer Island, which is where twenty thousand puffins nest. In burrows. There are also ten thousand rabbits and their burrows, and several thousand Manx Shearwaters, which also live in burrows. So we were given strict instructions not to leave the paths, because pretty much the whole island was covered with burrows, and we might squash a bird or rabbit otherwise.
We walked all round the island without seeing much other than seagulls, but eventually the puffins decided to make an appearance. They're really cool, and they're short and fat with short fat wings and short legs and they waddle around, and when they land on the sea they just stop flying and cannonball into the water from a foot or two up.
Today we explored the antique shops of Haverfordwest before driving home via Aberystwyth. We stopped in an antique shop in another town where they had some really cool stuff, including several ship's lanterns, nautical compasses and a sextant. But they were unfortunately all too expensive, otherwise I would have bought the lot.
We got back in time for the pub quiz, but everyone else was either ill or on holiday, so we finished in an unimpressive last place, and now I have to go to bed so I can get up in time for work again tomorrow.
