Let Us Play 4

I got my camera today. Yay! I have been playing with it ever since. It’s amazing – definitely the best camera I’ve owned. All the buttons are in just the right place and work exactly how you’d expect them to. Well, exactly how I expect them to anyway. It does weigh a tonne, but that’s partly because I splashed out and got the battery pack/vertical grip as well.

This evening I went to the Nexus Graduation Concert and took loads of photos. I set the camera to ISO 1600 and used the 28-90mm lens, which effectively becomes a 45-128mm lens on this camera. So I was able to get some good shots from the back of the room without using a flash. I was very impressed when I got home – the pictures were nearly all really sharp and well exposed – I was expecting loads of camera shake since I wasn’t using a tripod.

Oh, and although my new toy kind of overshadowed the concert for me, it was probably one of the best performed concerts Nexus has put on so far. Chama Mulenga’s performance in 2001 was very good, as was Dweeb’s last year. But generally, they just keep getting better.

How much did the Canon cost? Having been given a digital one I realise that the point and shoot/no focus digitals have quite a lot of limitations. So I’m not throwing my SLR away yet.

Just over £700, from http://www.bhphotovideo.com in the States. That’s including the kit lens, a 1Gb memory card, two extra batteries and the vertical hand grip/battery pack.

I’m still very pleased with it. I’ve just installed the hacked firmware which gives me ISO 3200, flash exposure compensation, manual selection of autofocus mode, mirror lockup and a few improvements to the user interface.

Shouldn’t that be ‘weigh’ at ton?

Okay, not sure how I managed to spell that wrong. I’ve corrected it now.
